Is Germany Really Free?
Yes. Most public universities in Germany charge zero tuition fees for all students, including international students, at both Bachelor and Master levels. You only pay a small semester contribution of around 150-350 EUR which includes public transport.
Language Requirements
Many Master programs are taught entirely in English, especially in engineering, computer science, and business. Bachelor programs are mostly in German, requiring a TestDaF or DSH certificate at level B2-C1.
Living Costs
You need approximately 934 EUR per month for living expenses in Germany. This is also the amount required in your blocked bank account for your student visa. Costs vary by city - Munich is most expensive, while cities in eastern Germany are more affordable.
How to Apply
Apply through uni-assist.de for most universities or directly through the university portal. You will need certified copies of your transcripts, language certificates, motivation letter, and CV.
Student Visa
Non-EU students need a student visa. Requirements include an admission letter, blocked account with 11,208 EUR, health insurance, and passport. Apply at the German embassy in your country.
Top Universities
TU Munich, LMU Munich, RWTH Aachen, Heidelberg University, Humboldt University Berlin, TU Berlin, and University of Freiburg are among the highest-ranked institutions.
Working While Studying
International students can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Many students work as research assistants (HiWi) at their university.
